On-Demand Service
On-Demand in general refers to a service
that provides a feature or a revenue generating
service instantly and immediately. The value
proposition for an on-demand service is
that the user or consumer of the service
avoids a significant up-front financial
investment and instead participates in a
"pay as you go" plan - a model
which makes on-demand services frequently
more affordable for users.
In the Infonox context, Infonox's payment
platform is not installed in the customer's
computers or data centers, instead, the
customer can access, view their network,
configure it and analyze its service it
via the Internet or Intranet or any other
centralized access point. On-demand may
also be referred to as Software as a Service.
To defray the fixed and sunken costs of
installing technology that becomes obsolete
fast, the concept of On-Demand is a break
through concept for the financial services
industry. On-Demand at Infonox simply means
that the technology adheres to the FRAMES
framework.
- Must be Flexible
- Must be Robust
- Must be Available
- Must be Maintainable
- Must be Extensible
- Must be Scalable
Operating Gateway or Payment Gateway?
Secure Payment Gateway companies help other
Processors conduct secure business on the
Internet using Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
technology.
They provide a system that passes credit
card data, authorization requests, and authorization
responses over the Internet using encryption
technology.
The transaction information is sent by
the Payment Gateway secure server via leased
line to the credit card network where the
validity of the card is checked and the
availability of funds on that account is
verified. An authorization code is returned
via leased line to the Payment Gateway;
the
authorization is encrypted by the Payment
Gateway and transmitted in encrypted form
to the web server of the merchant, which
triggers fulfillment of the order.
Many Banks and Bank/Processor alliances
use a Secure Payment Gateway Provider to
perform this task for them.
PAN
Personal Account Number. - The account number
associated with a credit, debit or charge
card. This is usually the same as the number
on the card.
Payroll Check
A paycheck is traditionally a paper document
issued by an employer to pay an employee
for services rendered. Some employer’s
pay workers using a check while others post
payroll to the employee’s bank account
electronically. A Payroll check is considered
to have less risk than a personal check.
A payroll card is a relatively newer product
and it is a plastic card that allows an
employee to access their paycheck by using
a card that looks like a bank debit card.
A payroll card is more convenient than a
check, because it can be used at participating
automatic teller machines to withdraw cash,
or in retail environments to make purchases.
Peripherals
A peripheral is a device that is added to
a kiosk in order to expand its abilities.
Peripheral is used to describe those devices
that are optional and are used to customize
a solution in line with requirements. Peripherals
may also be hooked up externally, typically
through some form of computer bus like USB.
Personal Check
A check is a negotiable instrument instructing
a financial institution to pay a specific
amount of a specific currency from a specific
demand account held in the maker/depositor's
name with that institution. Both the maker
and payee may be natural persons or legal
entities. Personal check often refers to
a check written by an individual.
Phone Card
A prepaid phone card is a thin plastic card
with a scratch PIN which can be purchased
through a retail store issued in various
denominations to make international or local
phone calls using an 1800 number and the
PIN. Using a phone card, people can make
phone calls all over the world using regular
phone lines at no additional charge.
PIN
Personal Identification Number. A number
associated with the card, that is supposedly
know only to the cardholder and the card
issuer. This number is used for verification
of cardholder identity.
PIN Pad
PINs are most often used for ATMs but are
increasingly used at the Point of sale,
especially for debit cards. A PIN pad is
a device which may also have a card reader
to read the magnetic stripe data and/or
chip. The cardholder simply enters their
PIN and the information is relayed automatically
to the bank account. If there are funds
available and the PIN is correct, the transaction
is completed.
POS Devices
Point of Sale or Point of Service devices
are the common payment processing devices
that we see on the check-out counters of
retail stores, banks, hotels, restaurants,
casinos and/or on self-service kiosks. They
include card processing terminals, signature
capture devices, pin pads, electronic registers,
wireless POS and printers.
Processors
"Processors" are companies that
process the credit card transactions through
the bank system for the merchant.
Public Browser Interface (PBI)
Software generally used in the kiosk industry
to display information, especially web sites,
that allows user interaction with the information
while protecting the computers operating
system. PBI are sometimes referred to as
the “kiosk operating system”.
