| The Man on the Moon - 1
Self-service networks require babysitting in the set-up stage. Vendors may promise a dedicated person for monitoring the kiosk to ensure that the kiosk runs reliably. This approach sounds great and during a pilot it helps a vendor to show maximum up time. For 10 kiosks it is perhaps even realistic, for 1000 it is clearly improbable. So, review your deployment plan. Are your vendors
promising more than they can deliver? Often the businesses input and questions can yield a more effective deployment plan than a larger scale pilot plan.

The Man on the Moon - 2
Be
cautious of promises that are not backed
by facts about software expertise. Remember
that informational kiosks are not transactional
kiosks. Also an ATM is primarily a cashdispenser
and cannot be a cost-effective multifunction
service delivery device. The architecture
and data structure required to monitor financial
transactions is completely different from
the system adequate for informational kiosks.
If a vendor has the majority of their experience
in informational Kiosks, be assured that
they don’t have the necessary know-how
for transactional services.
Rule 5 and 6
Be wary of exaggeration and unrealistic deployment plans. If your vendor says they will send a man on the moon for you, get a reality check.
